JapanLuxuryHub’s Review Methodology explains what our recommendations mean and what they do not establish. A useful shortlist should help you identify a suitable option, understand its tradeoffs and know what to check before booking.
Review Methodology: research versus firsthand experience
Unless a page explicitly documents a visit, our coverage should be read as a research-based guide. We do not claim to have inspected every property, sampled every restaurant or tested every experience mentioned. A business’s description, a third-party award and an author’s personal experience are different forms of evidence and should be identified accordingly.
How we compare hotels and ryokans
- Location and access: how the property fits the proposed route, including transfers and nearby activities.
- Type of stay: city hotel, resort or ryokan, and the pace and expectations each involves.
- Facilities and room suitability: the features relevant to the reader, with individual policies checked directly.
- Total cost: inclusions, supplements and cancellation conditions, not just a headline rate.
- Tradeoffs: reasons an otherwise appealing choice may not suit a particular traveler.
How we approach restaurants
Compare cuisine, dining format, location and reservation practicality. Michelin distinctions belong to the MICHELIN Guide and must be attributed to the relevant selection. Our recommendations are not Michelin ratings. Restaurant access and dietary accommodation must never be promised on the basis of reputation alone.
What a ranked list means
Rankings are editorial judgments within the scope of an article, not a scientific measure of every option in Japan. Each list should explain its criteria. A higher position does not mean an establishment is best for every reader, and a researched ranking does not imply anonymous inspections or personal visits.
We do not assign invented numerical scores. Where evidence is insufficient, identify the uncertainty or leave the claim out. The city-by-city hotel guide is intended to help choose a destination and accommodation style; a ranked shortlist has a different purpose and should not replace those practical comparisons.
