New luxury hotel openings in Japan need to be compared by their actual opening year, not simply by when they appeared in a travel roundup. This guide separates 2026 arrivals from recent 2025 openings that remain relevant to a trip planned in 2026.
Opening-year correction reviewed 28 August 2026. This is researched coverage, not a firsthand hotel review.
New luxury hotel openings in Japan: check the year
Capella Kyoto: 2026
Capella’s official announcement set 22 March 2026 as the opening date for its first Japan property in Kyoto’s Miyagawa-cho district. Check the hotel’s current booking information for available rooms, services and dining. Announcement details should not be treated as a guarantee that every facility is available on your dates.
Recent 2025 opening: Waldorf Astoria Osaka
Correction: this is a 2025 opening, not a 2026 debut. Hilton’s opening announcement identifies the April 2025 launch and an opening offer beginning 3 April 2025.
Waldorf Astoria’s first Japan property opened fronting Osaka Station, designed by André Fu Studio across 252 guestrooms. Fu has described the design intent as capturing Tokyo’s urban energy alongside Kyoto’s poetic serenity, translated into details like washi-paper headboards and a timber-and-bronze arcade with a circular water feature at the entrance. This is a meaningful addition to Osaka’s luxury hotel scene specifically, which has historically trailed Tokyo and Kyoto in international brand representation.
Recent 2025 opening: Rosewood Miyakojima
Rosewood’s official announcement gave 1 March 2025 as the opening date. Its inclusion here is as a recent resort option, not a new 2026 opening.
Rosewood’s Japan debut skipped the major cities entirely and went straight to Miyako Island in Okinawa prefecture, bringing ultra-luxury beachfront villas to one of the region’s most acclaimed stretches of water and coral reef. It pairs naturally with Okinawa’s existing beach and diving-focused resort scene rather than competing with it.
1 Hotel Tokyo: a 2026 addition
1 Hotel Tokyo, listed by the brand among 2026 openings, adds a design-conscious, wellness-forward option to a capital hotel scene that has historically been dominated by traditional five-star formality, giving travelers who want the omotenashi service standard without the formal lobby experience a new option.
Should You Book a Brand-New Opening?
New properties offer launch-period rates and a genuine reason to return to a city you’ve already visited, but early operations can be uneven in the first few months as staff and systems settle in, and opening dates in luxury hospitality slip more often than not. Capella Kyoto itself opened in March 2026 after an earlier planned Q4 2025 date. If a specific opening matters to your trip, confirm current operational status and real availability directly before building an itinerary around it.
Compare the stays rather than the launch publicity
Choose by the trip you want: city sightseeing, a Kyoto cultural itinerary or an island retreat. These locations are not interchangeable. Check the room category, transport, cancellation terms and whether the facilities that matter to you are operating during your stay. An opening offer is not automatically better value than an established hotel’s package.

Correction note: Waldorf Astoria Osaka and Rosewood Miyakojima were previously grouped under a 2026-opening introduction without identifying their 2025 opening dates. Their years are now explicit.
